Gilbert Burns drops a truth bomb on Islam Makhachev

Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev looks to be the fight the UFC is looking to book next in the lightweight division. Gilbert Burns knows the Brazilian lightweight very well and loves his game a lot.

Gilbert Burns has a very high level grappling game and has a good eye for others with exceptional skills. The UFC welterweight really likes Charles Oliveira’s grappling over Islam Makhachev.

“It’s so good, so technical, so beautiful,” UFC welterweight Burns told MMA Junkie. “You see the techniques, every time you see the techniques you stop and look and the details are so crisp, the momentum.

“The guillotine, he almost got a guillotine, then every time he knocked Justin down, he went into a scramble, then into an inverted triangle – he almost got it. Every time he saw he was losing position, he was already on his back. And I know Justin Gaethje has worked hard. He brought in Jorge Santiago, who is one of Kamaru’s (Usman) coaches. He is of a very high standard. I trained with Jorge several times. I know Jorge took an awful lot of time working with Justin and the guy kicked him out in a minute.

“He did the same thing with Dustin Poirier; almost broke Tony Ferguson’s arm, nobody does Tony like that. Tony has lost several times, but not in grappling. The guy is super technical, lots of submissions – guillotines, leg locks, armbars. Every time he takes your back, he’s so long, that body triangle. He is on another level.

Gilbert Burns has heard good things about Islam Makhachev but he is still with Charles Oliveira. The Russian UFC fighter has had good things said about him by Luke Rockhold.

“Islam is also a top contender,” Burns said. “I heard from Luke Rockhold and a few other guys too that he’s pretty good. I’m still going to put all my money on Oliveira. I think Oliveira gets that.

The UFC welterweight is done with his prediction for the fight. Charles Oliveira has the right game to give Islam Makhachev a rare loss.

“I think he can (submit) because of the hitting, because of the combination,” Burns explained. “Islam’s grappling and ground and pound are better than Oliveira’s, but Oliveira with combination strikes, clinch and submission attempts, it’s different. I think that’s what makes him the best.

“Not just jiu-jitsu. It is the length (also). These guys who are skinny and super bony, any kick people have no idea, any kick he throws hurts and Oliveira kicks a lot. Did you see what Justin said after the fight? The first thing he said after getting up: “You kick as hell.” And for Justin to say that, he was at war with Michael Chandler and he said, “Brother, you hit so hard.” So this guy hits hard, he’s bony with crazy grappling, with crazy clinch. I have Oliveira all day.
