By Aaron Humes: Belize will finish second again after a five-set loss to Guatemala, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 11-15 at the Central American U-21 Women’s Volleyball Championship in Belize Civic Center.

Guatemala took advantage of the power and precision placement of top waitress Maria Santa Cruz and took advantage of multiple mental lapses and errors from a Belize side who, for the first time in the tournament, felt the weight of being the host. Minister of State for Youth and Sports Gilroy Usher Senior and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow were among those present.

The usually dominant front block was pushed out of position on several occasions and unforced errors halted several Belize runs.

Belize led 2 sets to 1 after a comeback in the second and third sets, but Guatemala took control in the fourth set and edged the home team for the honours.

We congratulate the Belize team for another valiant effort even in defeat tonight.
