James Garner ‘excited’ for Erik ten Hag’s work as he drops hint at Manchester United future

Manchester United midfielder James Garner has admitted he was hoping for the chance to impress manager Erik ten Hag during pre-season.

The 21-year-old – who started England Under-21’s 2-1 loss to Slovenia on Monday night – spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest, helping the Midlands side secure promotion in Premier League. They beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley just over a fortnight ago to end their 23-year absence from the top flight.

Garner played a starring role at Wembley, ensuring he ended a second loan spell at Forest successfully. He has been excellent throughout the campaign, scoring four goals and 10 assists in all competitions, helping the club win promotion and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Unsurprisingly, Forest are keen to sign Garner on loan for the third time this summer, believing he would enjoy a full season of Premier League football for the first time in his career. However, many United fans are hoping he gets the chance to prove his worth at Old Trafford and impress Ten Hag.

Big changes are expected in United’s midfield this summer, which means the Birkenhead-born ace will be keen to work his way into the Dutchman’s plans. However, he admitted he still doesn’t know what will happen in regards to his future this summer.

“I haven’t spoken to Erik ten Hag yet,” admitted Garner. “Since the play-off final, I’ve gone straight with England, so I haven’t had a rest or a break yet.

“It’s been football, football, football. I haven’t spoken to anyone at the club yet. It’s time to rest now. I’m not sure what the future holds.”

James Garner has excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest this season.

Although currently unsure what could happen over the next two months, the midfielder wants to impress United’s new manager in pre-season. We understand that Ten Hag wants to take a look at Garner before making a final decision on his future.

Garner, when asked what his personal preference was this summer, added: “I’m not too sure, personally. I haven’t had a lot of time to honestly think about it.

“I went from the Championship play-off final to international football. I haven’t had time to think about what I want. I would like to continue pre-season and impress.

“It’s up to me as a player to impress and leave a mark. I know how good Ajax’s style of football is, so that’s exciting.”
