Local roundup: Sugar Valley drops doubleheader in high school softball action | News, Sports, Jobs

Sugar Valley was swept by Hughesville in a doubleheader, 16-0, 21-1. Both games lasted only three innings.

Ella Breneisen produced a monster performance in the second contest, going 4 for 4 with two homers, seven RBIs and four runs. Sara Stroup homered in the opener, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Hughesville scored 16 runs on two at-bats in that opener with McKenna Sones and Madeline Miller each going 2-for-2.

• Lock Haven shared a doubleheader with Millersville, losing the first game 9-1 before winning the second 5-1 to improve to 11-16 in college softball. In Game 1, Madi Waltman got the Bald Eagles off.

Amanda Criss went 2-for-2 in game one and followed it up with a 2-for-3 performance in game two with an RBI and a run.

Riley McClellan was 2 for 3 with an RBI in Game 2, and Bella Schmitt had a brace.

Jada Schellhammer allowed one run on seven hits in an all-out effort. The Tamaqua whipped up four batters and needed just 69 pitches to earn their second win of the year.

• In college baseball, Lock Haven has postponed its scheduled game against Mansfield due to weather. No make-up date has yet been determined.

• The Lock Haven women’s tennis team lost an away match to Shippensburg, 6-1, in PSAC action. Lock Haven fought hard in doubles, taking a victory at No. 2. The tandem of Christy McLean and Delani Wolever took a 6-2 win but the host Raiders took the team point in doubles with victories at No. 1 and an LHU forfeit at No. 3 in doubles.

Mia Shuler earned the Bald Eagles’ lone singles win. Shuler cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 No. 2 singles triumph to secure his sixth doubles win of the season.

• The Lock Haven women’s track and field team put in another solid effort at the Bison Outdoor Classic meet hosted by Bucknell University.

Outstanding distance runner Morgan Perry underlined the action of the first night with her sensational run of 17:37.48 over 5,000 meters. Perry fought his way through the pack in the final laps of the race to achieve second place in the PSAC and the fourth best time in LHU history.

Kiersten Lloyd made her college debut in the 3,000 meters and ran well, breaking eleven minutes as she clocked a final quarter of 78 seconds, finishing tenth with a final time of 10:57.56.

Freshman Lizzie Ostrander came out of Saturday’s 800 meters with her best time of the season. Her finish of 2:25.94 put her in a coveted PSAC top 16 finish at press time.

Phenom hurdler Billie Jo Bollinger performed well in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. In the 100-meter hurdles, Bollinger set a personal best of 14.75 seconds, which marks a PSAC No. 2. She later finished fifth in a stacked 400 mH field that included the U.S. Championships bronze medalist. 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Athletics Penn State’s Antoinette Bradley. His time of 1:03.81 was also the best time among Division II finalists.
