Oregon Drops Pac-12 Opener In Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon put itself in position to win its Pac-12 opener, but Arizona State made a run in the fourth quarter to emerge with an 11-9 victory on Friday afternoon.

Cassidy Eckert kept the Ducks (1-4, 0-1 Pac-12) in the game with a career-high 14 saves. Bailey Smith scored his first career hat trick while Lillian Strain and Hanna Hilcoff each scored twice. Morgan McCarthy contributed a goal, six draw checks and two caused turnovers.

How did it happen: The Ducks played their best defensive half of the season to open the game, limiting ASU (2-2, 1-0) to just three goals. Oregon struggled to gain draw checks in the first quarter, but Eckert stopped several ASU shots to hold the Sun Devils scoreless for the first 11:26 of the period.

Oregon came first on the board with a free position goal from Shunly Wallace. After two quick goals from ASU put the Sun Devils ahead, Smith responded with his own goal to tie the game at 2-2.

UO continued to play solid defense in the second quarter. McCarthy and Sydney Lawrence forced a key turnover on an ASU free position and Eckert stopped all but one shot. McCarthy also played on the offensive end, scoring Oregon’s fourth goal as the Ducks entered the break leading 4-3.

The Ducks and Sun Devils continued to battle through the third quarter. ASU went 5-4 up with two goals in 30 seconds before Smith and Hilcoff reclaimed the lead from Oregon. Stump responded to two more ASU goals with one of his own to send the teams into the fourth quarter tied at seven.

The Sun Devils retired early in the fourth. ASU led a 3-0 run in the first 8:23 of the period to go up 10-7. Oregon kept fighting. Hilcoff and Stump each scored a goal to cut the deficit to one with 4:34 remaining. Arizona State locked in the win by scoring a rebound and then grabbing control of the ensuing coin toss to miss time.

Following: Oregon heads to Los Angeles to take on No. 17 USC. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
