Peter Obi leaves the PDP and abandons presidential ambitions

People’s Democratic Party presidential candidate Peter Obi announced his decision to rid himself of the party and withdraw from the presidential race.

Obi announced his resignation from the PDP in a letter titled, ‘Resignation from the PDP and withdrawal from the presidential contest’, addressed to the national president of the party and visible on his official Twitter account.

The frontline presidential candidate’s action comes barely a day after a group supporting his presidential ambition asked him to quit the PDP following allegations of a gang by some party leaders to thwart his presidential candidacy.

The decision to quit the party after initially being slated for the contest comes days before the PDP’s presidential primaries.

Why the Obi is leaving the PDP

  • Peter Obi attributed the reason for his decision to recent developments within the party, which make it virtually impossible to continue to participate and make constructive contributions.
  • Peter Obi’s letter reads in part, ”I am writing to inform you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which has been transmitted to the President of Ward Agulu 2, Anaocha LGA, Anambra, effective Friday 20th May 2022. Therefore, I am informing you by this letter of my withdrawal for the presidential primaries of the PDP.
  • ”It was a great honor to contribute to nation-building efforts through our great party. Unfortunately, recent developments within our party make it nearly impossible to continue to participate and make such constructive contributions.
  • He said Nigeria’s challenges are deep rooted and require everyone to make deep sacrifices to save our country, adding that his commitment to saving Nigeria remains firm.
