The automated multitasking machine deposits finished parts

In machine shops around the world, there is a clear trend to implement multi-tasking machines with the aim of completing parts on a single piece of equipment. This efficient machining process eliminates the need to run parts on multiple machines, saving floor space, setup time and labor.

Fuji Machine America Corp., a creator of automated machine tools, combines machining and robot experience to introduce a new automated multitasking machining solution with an integrated robot.

“Any shop that can benefit from product finishing in a single machine is an ideal candidate for the Gyroflex,” said Frank Tortorich, vice president of sales and service at Fuji Machine America. He explains that the machine manages the process from the beginning with the raw material to the finished part, including measurement and quality testing.

The machine’s dual-opposed main spindles for simultaneous operation, a B-axis milling tool spindle, multiple workflows, tooling capability, built-in automation and rigidity are among the key features of the Gyroflex.

Double opposition pins. The machine’s opposing twin spindles positioned on the Z-axis slideways are of equal size and machining capability. They can perform the same operations (op-10a/10b) or can pass a part from the first spindle to the second while maintaining positioning accuracy, thus achieving op-10 and op-20. If the application calls two separate operations, a partition inside the machine is used to create two separate work areas. In addition, the Z-axis slide can move at high speed to reduce the loading time of the second spindle.

B-axis milling spindle. The B-axis milling spindle is mounted on rigid X-axis and Y-axis box slides. including turning, drilling and probing parts. Additionally, the B-axis and tool are clamped by a curvilinear coupling, which allows precise positioning of the index finger with the turret precisely centered, according to the company. Gyroflex also comes standard with Sandvik Coromant Capto C6 tool holder interfaces, which offer virtually unlimited tool combinations for all different types of applications, says Tortorich.

Multiple workflows. Various workflows are supported on this machine, depending on the needs of the machine shop. Left to left, right to right, left to right and right to left are all available. The company says the machine’s multiple workflows allow for flexible part processing and reduced setup/changeover times.

Tooling capacity. The two live tool turrets hold 15 tools, while the automatic tool changer (ATC) – located at the top of the machine – holds 40 tools. ATC contains multiples of the same tool for low mix, high volume applications where a tool may break or wear out and need to be replaced. And, for high-volume and low-volume applications, it can hold many different types of tools for quick tool replacement.

Built-in automation. The company’s three-axis gantry robot is integrated into the machine for unattended parts handling. The robot’s two arms — primary and secondary — access peripherals on the left and right sides of the machine, the company says.

The robot’s hydraulic chuck enables stable clamping and handling of workpieces with minimal space requirements. The slim, dual-hand design, according to Tortorich, provides flexibility and easy part setup as well as handling that requires minimal space.

The company offers an optional robot chuck clamp confirmation sensor on the Gyroflex. This is said to ensure that the part is properly clamped in the robot’s hand before loading or unloading the machine for a smooth and fast automation transfer process.

Rigidity. This machine is extremely rigid with a solid one-piece cast iron base design and box slides for both turrets and slides on the X, Y and B axes, the company says.
