Women’s lacrosse drops out of road contest with Pitt 17-11

VESTAL, NY — Binghamton women’s lacrosse struggled against Pitt on Sunday, but gave up two key points in a 17-11 loss to the Panthers at Highmark Stadium. The Bearcats (3-4) were strong in the tie and took 35 shots to Pitt’s 34 despite the loss.

Kenna Newman and Olivia Muscolino had hat tricks to lead the Bearcats. Newman started the team early, scoring two of BU’s first three goals. Muscolino got in on the action in the second, scored twice more and had two shots at the post late. Kristen Scheidel scored his first two goals of the year and Marisa Tancredi added the first goal of his career.

defensively, Paige Alletzhauser and Tancredi caused two turnovers each. Sofia Afkham also had seven draw checks, making his season a total of 40.

Newman scored the game’s first goal, but Pitt responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Scheidel put one aside to make it 3-2 and Newman added another to end the period, even though the Panthers scored two more.

Trailing 5-3 in the second, BU gave up four goals and scored just once to head into the break. Muscolino scored his first goal of the game, but Binghamton trailed 9-4 at halftime.

Pitt used three straight goals to take a 12-4 lead in the third. Muscolino, Newman and Jesse Barer all helped the Bearcats score four of the last five goals in the period to keep the game within reach at 13-8.

Another Panther run put the game away at 17-8, but Binghamton closed on a high, scoring three straight to end the game. Tancredi scored his first goal of the year and Hayley Weltner listed on the score sheet. Scheidel scored his second of the game to finalize the score.

The Bearcats will return home for a contest with Quinnipiac on Saturday. The draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
